Senior Justice Advocate

The Supreme Court of New South Wales is the highest court in the state and hears civil, criminal, and appellate matters. Its primary responsibility is to administer justice throughout the state.
We are seeking a highly motivated and legally qualified individual to fill the role of Senior Deputy Registrar for a temporary period of 12 months. This is a generalist position with various responsibilities including determining probate applications, conducting examinations under the Corporations Act 2001, managing the return of subpoena lists, conducting mediations under the court-annexed mediation scheme, sitting in court as an acting registrar to conduct directions hearings and hear interlocutory applications when needed, determining chamber applications, providing procedural information to registry staff, litigants, and practitioners, and exercising statutory functions.
Key Responsibilities:- Determine probate applications;
- Conduct examinations under the Corporations Act 2001, Criminal Assets Recovery Act 1900, Evidence on Commission Act 1995;
- Manage the return of subpoena lists;
- Conduct mediations under the court-annexed mediation scheme;
- Sit in court as an acting registrar to conduct directions hearings and to hear interlocutory applications when needed;
- Determine chamber applications, such as enforcing judgments, granting leave to issue subpoenas, making orders for substituted service;
- Provide procedural information to registry staff, litigants, and practitioners; and
- Exercise statutory functions.
- Be admitted as a legal practitioner in NSW;
- Have at least five years post-admission experience as a lawyer in NSW;
- Demonstrate highly developed legal skills and capabilities, with advocacy experience being desirable;
- Have sound knowledge and understanding of the Supreme Court Act 1970, Civil Procedure Act 2005, related rules, and practice and procedure;
- Be able to interpret and apply legislation; and
- Be able to work autonomously and complete a high volume of work in a short period of time.
