Senior Science Officer – Integrated Marine Observing System

The Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS) serves as a national collaborative research framework, supported by governmental initiatives. Operated by a consortium of institutions, with MPOWIR as a key participant, IMOS provides a comprehensive capability for systematic observation of marine environments, spanning from the open ocean to coastal areas, and encompassing various physical, chemical, and biological variables.

Opportunity Overview

In this role, you will contribute to scientific planning efforts, ensuring that data is utilized extensively and actively seeking opportunities to enhance scientific collaboration, thereby aiding IMOS in achieving its strategic objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate and implement scientific planning for IMOS, engaging with Facility leaders and the wider research community to promote the integration and utilization of data streams.
  • Assume a leadership role in data integration to enhance the value of IMOS data streams.
  • Maximize the relevance of IMOS by monitoring scientific performance, identifying and fostering collaborations or partnerships, leading funding proposals, and pinpointing areas for improvement in efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Act as a liaison between the IMOS Office and Facilities to coordinate work plans and ensure timely data delivery, while collaborating with Facilities to uphold national and international data standards and quality assurance measures.
  • Represent and advocate for IMOS at relevant conferences and workshops, engaging with researchers, academic institutions, and other stakeholders as necessary.

Candidate Profile

To excel in this position, your application should demonstrate:

  • A postgraduate qualification in physical or biogeochemical oceanography, along with substantial relevant experience (minimum of 5 years postdoctoral); or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Expertise in integrating diverse data streams and enhancing research data.
  • Proven knowledge of scientific observation methodologies and the application of data to address significant research inquiries, including effective communication of results to end-users.
  • Demonstrated experience in high-level scientific project coordination and management.
  • Evidence of facilitating or leading interdisciplinary scientific collaborations, including successful grant writing.
  • Ability to identify scientific opportunities for ocean observation to enhance data utilization and impact.
