Our organization seeks a skilled professional to fill the position of Bioinformatics Specialist. This role is critical in providing bioinformatics advice and support to our scientists, particularly in the development and maintenance of tools and pipelines for next-generation sequencing analysis.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage genomics-specific laboratory hardware and software
  • Oversee high-performance computing used within the laboratories, including cloud computing
  • Develop and maintain bioinformatics programs and pipelines in collaboration with scientists
  • Write, test, debug, and implement custom in-house software for genetic analysis of viruses, bacteria, and other biological or environmental samples
  • Assist and train scientists in integrating next-generation sequencing equipment with high-throughput analysis computing tools, including cloud environment
  • Manage in-house nucleic acid sequence and other genomic databases and interfaces with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS)
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Science, Bioinformatics, or relevant fields
  • Postgraduate qualification majoring in Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics, and/or Genomics (desirable)
  • Australian Federal Police security clearance (mandatory)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of UNIX-like operating systems and command-line operated software
  • Proficiency in programming languages (R, Python, Bash, etc.)
  • Expertise in writing, testing, and implementing bioinformatic analysis and pipelines
  • Familiarity with nextflow and snakemake (desirable)
