Special Education Teacher Position

This is a teaching role at a regional high school catering for a diverse community of learners.

The successful applicant will be responsible for teaching students with diverse learning needs, including those with autism, intellectual disabilities, physical disabilities and mental health disorders.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Teaching Special Education Classes: Teach special education classes to students with diverse learning needs.
  2. Collaboration and Support: Collaborate with executive staff, classroom teachers, SLSOs and the wider school community to implement adjustments and differentiated learning. Develop, implement and review Individual Student Plans to ensure student wellbeing and academic progress.
  3. Student Support: Support students, families and external agencies to enhance educational and wellbeing outcomes.
About the School:

Rutherford Technology High School has strong ties with the Aboriginal community and a close association with the Maitland Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (AECG).

The school has a sustained focus on explicit teaching and learning strategies that promote student growth and equity. Differentiation practices cater to the targeted needs of English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D), students with additional literacy and numeracy support needs, and High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) opportunities for students in all four domains.

Selection Criteria:
  1. Qualifications and Experience: Approval to teach special education and/or experience teaching students with diverse learning needs in a high school setting.
  2. Collaboration and Communication: Experience collaborating with executive staff, classroom teachers, SLSOs and the wider school community to implement adjustments and differentiated learning.
  3. Student Planning and Progress: Experience developing, implementing and reviewing Individual Student Plans.
  4. Inclusive Education: Inclusive education requires balancing academic progress with student wellbeing. How do you support both areas in your teaching practice?
