PhD Scholarship: Immersive Regenerative Tourism Experiences in Aotearoa

The proposed PhD project, He karapitipitinga mariko, aims to investigate the impact of Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) technologies on tourist experiences in Aotearoa New Zealand. This interdisciplinary research will explore opportunities to create immersive and interactive tourism experiences using techniques from virtual and augmented realities.
Research Objectives- To explore the impacts of AR/VR technologies on tourist experiences in Aotearoa New Zealand across different phases and in relation to different aspects of the visitor experience.
- To investigate the potential of AR/VR technologies to enhance tourist experiences and create new forms of physical and virtual/augmented visitor experiences.
- To develop a framework for evaluating the effectiveness of AR/VR technologies in enhancing tourist experiences.
The research will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining both qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis methods. The study will involve:
- Conducting a literature review to identify existing research on AR/VR technologies and their applications in tourism.
- Developing and testing AR/VR prototypes to evaluate their effectiveness in enhancing tourist experiences.
- Collecting and analyzing data from tourist surveys and interviews to assess the impact of AR/VR technologies on tourist experiences.
The expected outcomes of this research project include:
- A comprehensive understanding of the impact of AR/VR technologies on tourist experiences in Aotearoa New Zealand.
- A framework for evaluating the effectiveness of AR/VR technologies in enhancing tourist experiences.
- A set of recommendations for the development and implementation of AR/VR technologies in the tourism industry.
To be eligible for this PhD scholarship, applicants must have:
- A bachelor's degree with honours equivalent to first-class honours or a master's degree (AQF Level 9) incorporating a significant research component.
- Graduate research skills in social science methodologies and methods.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

- Relevance of research experience and skills to the project.
- Quality of the research proposal.
