About the Role

Xero is a leading cloud-based accounting and bookkeeping platform that empowers small businesses and their advisors to grow and thrive. As a Principal Engineer within the Site Reliability Engineering team, you will be a key influencer in shaping the company's reliability and scalability strategy.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the development of a multi-year reliability and scalability roadmap, ensuring that Xero's products are observable, stable, and performant.
  • Build and maintain deep relationships with cross-functional teams, influencing reliability outcomes and driving business growth.
  • Engage in productive challenge, manage different viewpoints, and move critical company priorities forward through curiosity and thoughtful questioning.
  • Influence technical and engineering strategy and direction, while remaining connected to day-to-day engineering challenges.
  • Lift team and individual performance through coaching, mentoring, goal clarity, feedback, and removing barriers.
  • Develop a team culture of ownership through role modeling, empowerment, continuous improvement, experimentation, and feedback.
  • Analyze complex challenges, facilitate collaborative problem-solving, and navigate obstacles efficiently.
  • Translate strategy and organizational needs into a technical vision and roadmap, driving implementation over time.
  • Provide thought leadership and guidance on security, scalability, performance, monitoring, analytics, documentation, and quality.
About the Team

The Site Reliability Engineering team at Xero drives and influences the company to provide the most reliable experience for customers. We are a global team based across New Zealand, Australia, and the USA, combining software and systems engineering to enable engineers across Xero to build and support products that are observable, stable, performant, tolerant to failure, and operate as intended in the face of varying conditions.

What You'll Bring
  • Reliability and distributed systems engineering experience, including running complex systems at large scale.
  • Strong strategic delivery experience in software engineering or platform engineering.
  • Experience working in environments with advanced security and networks.
  • Systems thinking and systems engineering expertise in the engineering environment.
  • Advanced experience in logging, monitoring, and observability of distributed systems, including troubleshooting and service level objectives.
  • Leadership in incident management and response, including complex and high-severity incidents.
  • Strong hands-on experience in DevOps, continuous delivery, CI/CD, automated quality, and safe deploy and release at scale.
  • Experience with SaaS developer tooling commonly used for observability and incident management.
