Research Opportunity in Dryland Farming Systems

We are seeking a highly motivated researcher to join our dynamic multidisciplinary team working on identifying the next frontier in dryland farming systems in Australia's Southern Grains Region (SGR). This project addresses a significant investment for the grains industry made by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC).

The successful candidate will contribute to generating insights into sustainable and profitable farming systems from crop rotation trials being undertaken across South Australia and Victoria. These trials will evaluate system performance metrics beyond production, including financial performance, soil health, GHG emissions, disease risk, and microbiome diversity.

The successful candidate will undertake both desktop and field activities, including data management and analysis of statistically designed field trials, and will be responsible for managing a trial located at The University of Adelaide's Roseworthy campus. The candidate will regularly liaise with farming systems groups and consulting agronomists who are part of the project.

There will be significant opportunities to undertake original research and work with growers and agronomists in the grains industry to co-create innovative tools and solutions that will drive real-world impact through improved farm profitability and sustainability.

Requirements
  • A PhD or equivalent experience in agricultural science, agricultural engineering, environmental science, or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience in planning and managing agronomic/farming system field trials, including undertaking soil and plant sampling and assessment.
  • Demonstrated experience in data analysis of field trials using widely applied software packages or computing languages.
  • Knowledge of dryland farming systems and an ability to interact with growers and agronomists to deliver outcomes for their benefit.
  • A publication record in scholarly journals relative to opportunity.
  • Hold current rights to work in Australia.
