Student Counsellor Role Overview

This is a key position within the school wellbeing team, focused on enhancing student mental health and wellbeing.

Job Description:

The successful candidate will play a vital role in supporting the mental health and wellbeing of students through the implementation of small group and whole-school mental health prevention and promotion activities.

The incumbent will also develop, implement, and evaluate processes and strategies to enhance mental health and wellbeing prevention, promotion, and early intervention.

Additionally, they will provide direct counselling support to clients with a range of mental health needs and coordinate supports for young people with complex needs.

Requirements:

Qualifications include registration as a psychologist, social worker, mental health nurse, occupational therapist, or counsellor of a prescribed class. Full registration with AHPRA is also required for psychologists, mental health nurses, and occupational therapists.

Membership with the Australian Association of Social Workers is necessary for social workers, while practising membership with the Australian Counselling Association or Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia is required for counsellors.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated direct counselling experience and hold a current Working With Children Check.

Desirable Qualifications:

Specialisation in educational and/or developmental psychology is desirable for psychology applicants, as is mental health nurse credential and membership with the Australian College of Mental Health Nurses for mental health nurse applicants.
