Chief First Nations Health Officer - Job Description

This key senior leadership position will elevate the visibility and strategic importance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health across Queensland.

Job Summary:

The Chief First Nations Health Officer is a crucial role responsible for strengthening high-level relationships, leading the delivery of health equity strategies, and providing culturally safe strategic leadership.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Advise the Minister on state, national, and international issues impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and wellbeing.
  • Represent Queensland Health in high-level forums and lead multidisciplinary teams to achieve system-wide improvements in health equity.
Requirements:Essential Skills and Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated direct, lived-experience knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and identity.
  • Proven track record of advocating for and leading health equity strategies for First Nations peoples, supported by extensive experience in strategic leadership across complex systems.
  • Strong governance and policy planning experience with ability to work effectively with Ministers, senior executives, and community leaders.
  • Exceptional stakeholder engagement and negotiation skills with history of influencing outcomes across government, community-controlled sectors, and health services.
  • Experience in addressing institutional racism and embedding culturally safe practices within health systems.
  • High-level strategic, operational, and financial management capabilities with demonstrated ability to deliver measurable outcomes in complex environments.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in guiding complex organisations through change and fostering a values-based culture.
