North Ryde, New South Wales, Australia Macquarie University Full time
About the Role

We are seeking an exceptional Instrument Scientist to join our team at Macquarie University. As a key member of our Australian Astronomical Optics (AAO) group, you will play a crucial role in the design, development, and delivery of ground-based or space-based optical instruments.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead system design and development on key instrument contracts and additional instrumentation projects
  • Manage the Implementation, Integration, Verification and Validation (IIVV) plan and activities, and prepare associated review documentation
  • Conduct research into instrumentation for astronomy or space-based observations, and participate in academic functions of the university
  • Assist AAO-MQ in grant applications to secure funding
About You

You will have a PhD in astronomical instrumentation or a closely related field, with deep experience as an Instrument Scientist. You will possess excellent skills in managing the IIVV plan and leading the design and development of astronomical instrumentation. A strong knowledge of systems engineering practices, optical/infrared astronomical instrumentation, and adaptive optics systems is essential.

About Us

Macquarie University is a leading institution in the development of optical instruments for astronomy. Our AAO group has a 40+ year heritage of building instruments for observatories globally. We are excited to take a significant role in leading and growing Australia's strength in astronomical instrumentation, partnering with the Australian National University and the University of Sydney under the banner of Astralis Instrumentation Consortium.

Our team of experts will build on the University's existing strengths in astronomy, photonics, laser technology, microfabrication, applied optics, and sensing communications. We aim to increase industry engagement, identify opportunities to apply our expertise to medicine and defence, and expand our presence in the fields of optics and sensing.

We offer a well-defined career path, generous leave entitlements, and excellent 17% superannuation contributions. Our campus features large green open spaces, fantastic facilities, and excellent public transport links.
