Harm Reduction Project Officer Job Description

The Harm Reduction Project Officer plays a pivotal role in the development and support of harm reduction initiatives, specifically the Needle & Syringe Program (NSP), to prevent and reduce transmissible infections and other drug-related harms among people who inject drugs in the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District (SESLHD).

As a key member of the team, the successful applicant will be responsible for establishing new NSP outlets, designing and delivering training packages, supporting existing NSPs, and participating in health promotion and community development activities.

Additionally, this position supports the strategic development of initiatives aimed at identifying hard-to-reach populations at risk of acquiring HIV and hepatitis C, developing outreach models, and maximizing uptake of treatment.

The Harm Reduction Project Officer will work closely with stakeholders, including community members, non-government organizations, and LHD executives, to ensure effective coordination and delivery of projects.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and support harm reduction initiatives, including the NSP
  • Establish new NSP outlets and design training packages
  • Support existing NSPs and participate in health promotion activities
  • Contribute to the strategic development of initiatives targeting hard-to-reach populations
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure effective project coordination
Required Skills and Qualifications:
  • Relevant tertiary qualification and relevant work experience
  • Demonstrated understanding of harm reduction principles and commitment to the NSP
  • Ability to coordinate, manage, and evaluate projects, meeting deadlines and liaising with diverse stakeholders
  • Capacity to develop, deliver, and evaluate training programs
  • Understanding of health promotion and community development frameworks
  • Advanced communication and professional writing skills
  • Willingness to provide frontline healthcare services in unpredictable environments
