Role Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Research Scientist to lead our environmental monitoring project. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing an open-data platform to monitor forest structure, condition, and carbon stocks across Australia.

This is an exciting opportunity to work with ground-based and remotely-sensed datasets, contributing to a national roadmap for sustainable forestry practices.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and implement the open-data platform, integrating diverse datasets for case study areas
  • Collaborate with project partners and data owners to establish robust data management practices
  • Apply machine learning techniques to estimate forest baselines and trends, communicating findings through presentations, reports, and scientific publications
  • Support the development of a national forest monitoring framework, ensuring alignment with Australian government initiatives
  • Work closely with the research team to identify opportunities for innovative applications of environmental monitoring technologies
Requirements
  • PhD (or near completion) in environmental science, remote sensing, data science, or a related field
  • Proven experience managing large spatial datasets and applying machine learning techniques
  • Strong understanding of open data principles and data management best practices
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to present complex ideas to diverse audiences
  • Strong organisational skills and a collaborative mindset for cross-stakeholder delivery
