Senior Legal Counsel Job Description

This is a senior legal counsel role providing technically excellent, risk aware and commercially sensible legal support to our business.

  • Managing the conduct and resolution of disputes and litigated matters
  • Managing external disputes lodged with AFCA and other external bodies
  • Managing and instructing external law firms

The successful candidate will be experienced in advising on litigation and dispute resolution, preferably in relation to life insurance and other financial services businesses. They will focus on life insurance disputes before the Courts and Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA) and may also be involved in other disputes such as Regulatory, Commercial, Superannuation and Investments, and Employment disputes.

Key responsibilities include:

  3. Providing commercially focused high-quality legal advice
  4. Supporting capability uplift and mentoring other team members
  5. Leading by example, role-modelling collaboration, innovation, and technical and service excellence

We are looking for someone with:

  • Australian legal qualifications and a current Australian unrestricted practising certificate
  • Experience acting or advising on litigation and dispute resolution
  • Ability to constructively challenge, consult and advise, whilst maintaining solid relationships
  • Ability to effectively negotiate, influence and engage a broad range of senior internal and external stakeholders to drive business outcomes
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Extensive knowledge and practical understanding of applicable regulatory requirements and legal practices
  • Strong relationship management skills and an ability to interact professionally, discretely and confidently so as to be a trusted legal adviser
  • Excellent technical writing skills, including the ability to review and draft legal documents, policies and submissions
  • Strong time management skills and ability to manage conflicting deadlines
  • Flexibility and adaptability to manage conflicting priorities in a fast-paced environment
