Criminal Law Specialist

As a criminal law specialist, you will play a pivotal role in preparing cases and advocating on behalf of clients in matters related to criminal law. This position offers the opportunity to expand your expertise by handling diverse casework across a wide range of criminal law and associated areas, contributing to enhancements in the legal aid and criminal justice systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Represent clients in criminal law matters, including case preparation and instructing counsel in various jurisdictions, with personal appearances for legally aided clients at bail applications, pleas, summary trials, and committal hearings in the Magistrates and Children's Courts.
  • Provide duty lawyer services in the Magistrates and Children's courts, encompassing support for clients in custody, appearances on higher court call-overs, and mentions.
  • Offer expert legal information and advice to clients and members of the public.
  • Deliver outcomes through self-management, receiving supervision and guidance from senior legal practitioners as required.
  • Support Legal Aid Queensland's contributions to policy development, procedural reforms, and initiatives aimed at improving legal service delivery.
  • Promote networking among relevant internal and external stakeholders.
  • Contribute to team planning, suggesting improvements to work practices.
