**Mental Health Practitioner Job Summary:**
Mental health practitioners work in schools to support students' mental well-being and promote a healthy climate. They contribute to whole-school health and wellbeing plans, build teaching staff capability, and develop programs to address student mental health concerns.
This role is part of the government's initiative to expand mental health and wellbeing support in government schools. Mental health practitioners operate in collaboration with the Department of Education Regional Mental Health Branch to enhance mental health prevention and promotion activities in the school.
The key responsibilities include:
- Implementing small group and whole-school mental health prevention and promotion activities
- Developing processes and strategies to enhance mental health and wellbeing prevention, promotion and early intervention
- Assessing and analysing wellbeing issues, providing direct counselling support to clients with mental health needs
- Coordinating supports for young people with complex needs, referrals to specialist services as appropriate
Mental health practitioners must have highly developed communication, networking and interpersonal skills, and a clear understanding of legislative requirements regarding privacy of health information.
