Job Description

The Guardian Australia Scott Trust Cadetship program offers a paid 12-month, fixed-term journalism cadetship. As part of this role, you will gain practical content creation experience and formal journalism training and mentoring.

You will work in a fast-changing, high-pressure news environment, creating engaging content for various departments within Guardian Australia. This opportunity is ideal for those with an interest in growing First Nations and cultural and linguistic diversity in our newsroom.

Key Responsibilities
  • Receive formal journalism training in areas such as news writing, news gathering, and court reporting.
  • Gain practical experience producing content for various departments within Guardian Australia.
  • Rotate through editorial departments under mentorship from senior editors.
  • Generate original content and cover stories in innovative ways.
  • Engage with readers, respond to ideas, and use information as source material.
Required Skills and Qualifications
  • Demonstrable interest in journalism or practical journalism experience.
  • Interest in writing, including published work as a student journalist or in other publications.
  • Knowledge of racial issues in Australia and how they have affected communities.
  • Willingness to learn about digital platforms and work in a fast-changing news environment.
