About Our Team Member

Derek grew up on a farm in WA's South Coast, developing an appreciation for nature and hard work. He started teaching at Santa Maria College as a uni prac student in 2015 and officially joined the team in 2020.

From Sports Science to Teaching Career

Derek didn't always plan to be a teacher. After high school, he started a Sports Science degree but dropped out after a year. He later pursued a teaching career, drawn by his love of learning and reading. At Notre Dame, he added Religious Education as a second teaching area.

A Passion for Cricket and Family Life

Derek has a passion for cricket, playing as a fast bowler at the Cockburn Cricket Club. He loves the challenge of the game, which helps him develop resilience and teach students how to handle failure. As a new father, Derek appreciates the beauty of living in the moment with his toddler Benjamin.

Derek embodies the Mercy values, bringing perspective, heart, and humour to his work. Whether teaching Religious Education or sharing his love of cricket, Derek connects learning to life and leads with compassion, curiosity, and care.
