About the Role

Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) is seeking a highly skilled Principal Engineer to join our System Design division. As a key member of our team, you will play a critical role in planning the power system in the context of unprecedented transformation.

The rapid transition to renewable energy generation and electrification of various sectors has led to a significant increase in proposed transmission and distribution connection projects. You will be instrumental in connecting a range of technologies, including onshore wind, offshore wind, hydro, and solar generation; battery and storage systems, and hydrogen plants.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead technical support on load modelling, including inverter-based loads (IBL).
  • Actively engage in discussions related to NER Schedule 5.3 requirements.
  • Provide expert contribution on system strength matters in relation to IBLs.
  • Provide regulatory support for load access standards review.
  • Prepare clear, concise, and high-quality written and verbal communication to inform internal or external stakeholders on a range of issues for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ensure a culture of continuous improvement of the connections modelling is embedded within the team, including application of latest NER requirements, CRI outcomes, and regulatory changes.
  • Support and cultivate a positive workplace culture that is aligned with AEMO values.
Requirements
  • Relevant tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering or other discipline relevant to power systems analysis.
  • Load modelling technical experience.
  • Experience in facilitating working groups and negotiating the resolution of technically complex issues across internal and external stakeholders with competing objectives and a variety of commercial and reputational drivers.
  • Understanding of the NER, the NEM, and the Rule change framework.
  • Demonstrated experience in supporting and developing technical expertise in teams via a structured and transparent approach.
  • Ability to communicate technical/engineering concepts to the non-technical audience.
