About the Opportunity

Monash University is seeking a highly motivated researcher to contribute to a critical project that addresses the gap in policy evaluation models for net zero greenhouse gas emissions.

The PhD scholarship will support the development of a system dynamics model that incorporates social and political drivers and barriers to adoption of net zero technologies and lifestyle solutions. This innovative approach will enable policymakers to design better strategies to overcome obstacles, build momentum for change, and accelerate adoption of sustainable solutions.

About the Project

This research project is funded by the Australian Research Council (ARC) and aims to address the crucial knowledge gap in modelling the technological, social, and political drivers of the net zero transition. The successful candidate will be supervised by senior researchers with expertise in system dynamics modelling and sustainability transitions.

The project will involve developing a comprehensive system dynamics model that integrates multiple factors influencing the adoption of net zero technologies and practices. This will guide policymakers in designing effective strategies to overcome barriers and accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy.

About the Supervisory Team

The principal supervisor for this project is Dr Cameron Allen, a Senior Research Fellow and recipient of the ARC's Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA). Co-supervisor Dr Enayat Moallemi brings expertise in risk-benefit assessment of net zero options for sustainability transitions using various knowledge sources and methods.

The PhD candidate will also benefit from additional co-supervisors who may join the project in due course, providing a rich learning experience and opportunities for collaboration.

About Monash Sustainable Development Institute

As a world-leading institute, Monash Sustainable Development Institute (MSDI) brings about change through pioneering research, education, and innovation. Our multidisciplinary team is committed to delivering impact for policymakers, institutions, and communities worldwide.

Your Skills and Qualifications

We are looking for candidates with a strong background in science and engineering or social science and policy analysis. Experience with systems modelling (e.g., system dynamics, integrated assessment, or agent-based models) and/or research on sustainability transitions and transformations will be highly regarded.

A robust understanding of system dynamics modelling and its applications in sustainability transitions is essential. Strong communication skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are also required.

Eligibility Requirements

This opportunity is available to domestic students only. Candidates must meet the Monash University minimum requirements for admission to a PhD.

How to Apply

Please submit your application via the provided link, including:

  • A cover letter describing your research interests and why you would like to undertake a PhD
  • A CV including qualifications, academic achievements, publications, work history, and references
  • A copy of your academic transcript(s)
