About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Family Support Specialist to join our team at St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne. In this role, you will be working closely with our Director Lived Experience Workforce and Strategy to improve the service's responsiveness to family-carer-supporter needs.

You will be responsible for advocating for systemic changes that enable and ensure a carer lens, perspective, and view is included in service planning, delivery, and implementation.

Your Contribution
  • Direct personal experience as a family member, carer, or supporter of a person with lived experience of mental health challenges and accessing mental health services.
  • Broad understanding of the impact of mental health challenges on family-carers-supporters.
  • Good working knowledge of recovery-oriented and strength-based practice in mental health.
  • Working knowledge of systemic advocacy and how it differs from individual advocacy.
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills, including problem-solving, conflict-resolving, and sound oral and writing skills.
  • Able to work collaboratively with a wide variety of family-carers-supporters, staff, key stakeholders, and relevant committees.
  • Understanding of the diversity of cultural and linguistic backgrounds of our community, and the impact this has on consumers' and families-carers-supporters' experience of mental health challenges and the mental health system and services.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with limited day-to-day directions.
  • Able to establish and maintain respectful relationships whilst advocating for system change.
  • Data collection and some understanding of program monitoring and evaluation.
