Job Title: Livestock Research Assistant

This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic team as a Livestock Research Assistant. The successful candidate will contribute to delivering solutions for the livestock industry, specifically focusing on reducing methane emissions from grazing cattle and improving productivity.

The role involves working with cattle in pen and paddock environments, preparing feed and diet supplements, maintaining and cleaning animal facilities, operating cattle respiration systems, calibrating remote sensing equipment, and collecting data.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Under general supervision, perform routine animal handling or operational tasks requiring skills developed through experience or training.
  • Design and implement routine protocols to achieve research objectives.
  • Collect samples according to defined standards and ensure they are stored and identified correctly.
  • Identify and report anomalies and co-design solutions where appropriate.
  • Assist in establishing experiments, monitor, summarize, and record results, and maintain records of experimental outcomes.
  • Develop new processes or apparatus by adapting existing techniques and components to meet special circumstances or undertake modifications to methods requiring some level of innovation.
  • Respond courteously and efficiently to requests for services, keep clients informed about progress, and redirect requests to appropriate staff when required.
  • Communicate openly, effectively, and respectfully with all staff, clients, and suppliers in the interests of good business practice, collaboration, and enhancement of the organization's reputation.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary, regionally dispersed research team to carry out tasks in support of the organization's scientific objectives.

Key Requirements:

  • A tertiary-level degree or equivalent relevant work experience in livestock husbandry.
  • Demonstrated livestock experience, including general husbandry and understanding of animal behavior.
  • Demonstrated ability for accurate record-keeping.
  • Demonstrated skills in using data entry and analysis software.
