About Our Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Legal Advisor to join our team.

The Legal Advisor will be responsible for assisting the Regional Legal Adviser in strategizing, planning, and implementing programs to promote International Humanitarian Law (IHL) in the Pacific region.

This includes monitoring and analyzing legislative developments related to IHL, researching and drafting analyses, advice, and presentations, as well as delivering presentations on IHL and humanitarian issues to various audiences.

Additionally, the Legal Advisor will collaborate with academic circles in the Pacific region on ICRC pedagogical tools, resources, and events, and support the planning, preparation, and execution of visits, meetings, and other events hosted by ICRC.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist the Regional Legal Adviser in developing and implementing programs to promote IHL in the Pacific region.
  • Monitor and analyze legislative developments related to IHL, identifying areas of concern and opportunities for improvement.
  • Research and draft analyses, advice, and presentations on IHL and humanitarian issues, providing expert input to the Regional Legal Adviser and other stakeholders.
  • Deliver presentations on IHL and humanitarian issues to government officials, academic circles, students, and the general public, promoting understanding and awareness of IHL principles and practices.
  • Collaborate with academic circles in the Pacific region on ICRC pedagogical tools, resources, and events, fostering partnerships and knowledge-sharing.
  • Support the planning, preparation, and execution of visits, meetings, and other events hosted by ICRC, ensuring smooth logistics and effective communication.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor of Laws or equivalent degree
  • A post-graduate degree in a relevant field is an asset
  • Strong knowledge of IHL principles and practices
  • Experience in research, analysis, and synthesis of legal and policy texts
  • Excellent communication skills to explain complex issues clearly and concisely
  • Demonstrated initiative, autonomy, adaptability, and attention to detail
  • Capacity to set and manage priorities, completing assignments efficiently to meet deadlines
  • Excellent organisational and computer skills (MS Office)
  • Sense of team spirit and ability to establish cooperative working relationships with diverse teams
  • General interest in humanitarian issues
  • Valid driver's license
  • Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally
Benefits:

This is a full-time position on a permanent contract based in Canberra, starting late October 2025. The estimated salary is AUD95,000 plus 12% super, with eligibility for salary sacrificing. ICRC offers an additional monthly contribution to private health insurance.
