The Mass Properties Engineer plays a pivotal role in the success of our submarine programmes. This position involves estimating and collating mass property data to ensure weight and centroid control, while also collaborating with system design engineers to accurately estimate mass and centroid.
Key Responsibilities:- Estimate mass properties for equipment and systems to deliver accurate weight and centroid control on complex projects.
- Support the team lead to aggregate weight and centroid reports and present the status to senior leaders.
- Collaborate with system design engineers to develop and implement effective mass estimation strategies.
- Maintain a comprehensive database of parts mass properties to facilitate informed decision-making.
- Provide input to and lead weight-saving strategies, identifying opportunities for cost reduction and process improvement.
- Interrogate CAD models to determine estimates for mass properties with associated uncertainties.
- Utilise statistical analysis to provide a whole-boat picture of weight risk and opportunity to stakeholders and customers.
- Qualified in STEM subjects or extensive relevant experience.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
- Proficient in Microsoft packages, with expertise in Excel.
- Ability to understand and interpret engineering data.
- Desirable: Experience working with large, complex systems; Data analysis experience including interpretation, visualisation, manipulation and presentation; Experience of using CAD packages and programmes; CEng / IEng status or a clear pathway to achieving professional recognition.
- The Weight Engineering Team is a specialist group of Engineers and Data Scientists who estimate, collate and present mass properties data for major submarine programmes.
- Our team plays a critical role in the whole-boat design and assurance process.
