About This Role

The Australian Bureau of Statistics is seeking a highly skilled leader to support the 2026 Census of Population and Housing. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading national field operations, managing teams, and ensuring timely delivery of quality outcomes.

  • Lead and manage a team of staff, providing guidance on work progress and key decisions.
  • Offer workload, procedural, Work Health and Safety, and technical assistance to Census field and office staff.
  • Relay important information between field staff and the Field Operations Management team.
  • Resolve or escalate complex field queries, issues, and incidents.
  • Undertake performance management of office-based and field staff as required.
  • Coordinate workloads for field staff within their work areas.
  • Monitor operational intelligence to ensure Census targets are met.
  • Support the recruitment of office-based and field staff when needed.
  • Manage responses to incidents and crises.

This role requires strong leadership and project management skills, with experience in operations and/or project management, recruitment, training, logistics, and conflict resolution.

The successful candidate will possess excellent communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills. They will be able to motivate a team and deliver high-quality outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Lead a team of staff and communicate clearly about work progress and key decisions.
  2. Provide technical assistance to Census field and office staff.
  3. Relay important information between field staff and the Field Operations Management team.
  4. Resolve complex field queries, issues, and incidents.
