Student Support Specialist

The Student Counsellor plays a vital role in fostering a supportive environment that acknowledges and respects student diversity, promoting academic success.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver welfare counselling to students on academic progression, policy, pastoral care, living skills, cultural adjustment, health issues, mental health, study stress and anxiety, accommodation, employment, personal crisis, and College/University policy and procedures.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor programs and resources to enhance student wellbeing and engagement.
  • Manage critical incidents involving students with the Critical Incident Management Group.
  • Case manage students requiring support and refer to external agencies.
  • Collaborate with partner universities, professional organisations, and government agencies on support, referral, and advocacy.
  • Participate in Appeals Committees as required.
  • Maintain welfare and safety arrangements for Under 18 students according to relevant legislation.
  • Liaise with students on accommodation, wellbeing, and guardianship.
  • Compile data and report on trends related to student issues.

Qualifications and Essential Criteria

  • Relevant bachelor's degree and/or formal counselling qualification combined with substantial work experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and delivering student support programs, preferably in a tertiary environment.
  • High-level interpersonal and oral communication skills with ability to consult, counsel, and liaise with diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, coordinate multiple tasks of varying priorities, negotiate sensitive issues confidentially, and maintain documentation and audit trails.
  • Knowledge of or ability to quickly acquire knowledge of relevant legislation and policies.
  • Sound knowledge of workplace health and safety principles.
