We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Counsellor to join our team at the Department of Corrective Services. As a Prison Counsellor, you will play a critical role in providing comprehensive counselling services to individuals in custody, addressing a wide range of psychological and emotional issues.
Key Responsibilities- Provide individual and group counselling sessions to prisoners, focusing on enhancing their overall well-being and promoting a positive and rehabilitative environment.
- Develop and implement tailored support and interventions to address the unique needs of each prisoner, including those with mental health issues, substance abuse problems, and other complex needs.
- Collaborate with other healthcare professionals and correctional staff to ensure a comprehensive and coordinated approach to prisoner care.
- Conduct risk assessments and develop strategies to mitigate risks associated with prisoner behaviour, including suicide and self-harm.
- Participate in ongoing professional development and training to stay up-to-date with best practices in correctional counselling and mental health.
- Master's degree in Counselling, Psychology, or a related field.
- Minimum 2 years of experience in a counselling or mental health role, preferably in a correctional setting.
- Strong knowledge of therapeutic assessment and intervention techniques, including cognitive-behavioural therapy and trauma-informed care.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse populations, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
