As a key member of our team, the Work Health and Safety Specialist will play a pivotal role in driving a shift in safety performance and supporting operations to achieve safety excellence. This will be achieved by influencing, coaching, and working directly with Front Line Leaders, Contracting Partners, and the broader workforce.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Building capability amongst leaders and teams to achieve effective and efficient WHS outcomes
  • Monitoring and assessing environment procedures, equipment, and installations on a regular basis to ensure an acceptable risk level
  • Implementing required Risk Management and Management Change strategies in line with company and legislative requirements
  • Facilitating WHS training within operations to support the effective implementation of systems and build capability within the operations
  • Working closely with and supporting other team members and undertaking other duties as required to deliver optimal WHS outcomes
  • Maintaining and up-to-date knowledge of current WHS legislations and standards to provide relevant advice and support
  • Providing timely and accurate advice and support towards WHS risk reduction and safe execution of work within the allocated business unit
  • Coordinating and conducting hazard identification and risk assessments within the business where more complex tools are required
  • Providing ongoing investigation, coaching, and leadership for safety professionals and line personnel to ensure outcomes are aligned with SIMEC mining investigations requirements

Our ideal candidate will have the ability to work in a rapidly changing environment with a drive and resourcefulness to research and find solutions to challenging issues as well as implement any required changes. Ability to work with people from all levels, be focused and results-oriented, organize information, take action, and be highly autonomous with a sense of urgency.

Key qualifications and skills include:

  • Tertiary WHS qualifications or suitable qualifications in a relevant discipline
  • Certificate IV in Workplace Training and Assessment (preferable)
  • Strong communication (verbal and written) and critical thinking skills
  • Proven ability to engage and influence stakeholders and build effective working relationships
  • Strong relationship management skills and the ability to engage and influence stakeholders and build effective working relationships
  • Ability to develop and manage health and safety management systems
  • Experience in facilitating incident investigations and risk assessments
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Strong knowledge of health and safety legislation, risk management, auditing, reporting, and investigation requirements
