Job Title: Safety Specialist

Reporting to the Safety Superintendent, the Safety Specialist plays a crucial role in driving a shift in safety performance and supporting operations to achieve safety excellence. This involves influencing, coaching, and working directly with Front Line Leaders, Contracting Partners, and the broader workforce.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Build capability amongst leaders and teams to achieve effective and efficient WHS outcomes.
  • Monitor and assess environment procedures, equipment, and installations on a regular basis to ensure an acceptable risk level.
  • Implement required Risk Management and Management Change strategies in line with company and legislative requirements.
  • Facilitate WHS training within operations to support the effective implementation of systems and build capability within the operations.
  • Work closely with and support other team members and undertake other duties as required to deliver optimal WHS outcomes.
  • Maintain and up-to-date knowledge of current WHS legislations and standards to provide relevant advice and support.
  • Provide timely and accurate advice and support towards WHS risk reduction and safe execution of work within the allocated business unit.
  • Coordinate and conduct hazard identification and risk assessments within the business where more complex tools are required.
  • Provide ongoing investigation, coaching, and leadership for safety professionals and line personnel to ensure outcomes are aligned with SIMEC mining investigations requirements.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to work in a rapidly changing environment with a drive and resourcefulness to research and find solutions to challenging issues. They will be able to work with people from all levels, be focused and results-oriented, organize information, take action, and be highly autonomous with a sense of urgency.

Requirements:
  • Tertiary WHS qualifications or suitable qualifications in a relevant discipline.
  • Certificate IV in Workplace Training and Assessment (preferable).
  • Strong communication (verbal and written) and critical thinking skills.
  • Proven ability to engage and influence stakeholders and build effective working relationships.
  • Strong relationship management skills and the ability to engage and influence stakeholders and build effective working relationships.
  • Ability to develop and manage health and safety management systems.
  • Experience in facilitating incident investigations and risk assessments.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong knowledge of health and safety legislation, risk management, auditing, reporting, and investigation requirements.
