Senior Leadership Opportunity in Government Justice

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Principal Lawyer to join our team. This is a rare opportunity to play a senior leadership role at the heart of Queensland's justice system.

About the Role

This is an exceptional chance to make a real impact on government decision-making, promoting fairness and integrity, while enjoying a supportive, values-driven culture and flexible work arrangements. As Senior Principal Lawyer, you will work directly with the General Counsel to deliver expert, impartial legal advice and oversee complex and sensitive matters.

Your primary responsibility will be to provide strategic advice and manage sensitive litigation for the Attorney-General, Director-General, and other senior leaders, particularly in employment and administrative law.

Key Responsibilities
  • Partner with the General Counsel, Crown Law, and external providers to ensure high-quality, value-for-money legal services.
  • Provide strategic advice and manage sensitive litigation for the Attorney-General, Director-General, and other senior leaders, particularly in employment and administrative law.
  • Monitor legal developments, anticipate risks, and advise on emerging issues affecting the department.
  • Review and endorse complex briefs and Cabinet submissions with legal implications.
  • Lead and develop a talented team of lawyers, creating an engaged, capable and empowered workforce.
Requirements

We are looking for a senior legal professional who can demonstrate:

  • Extensive post-admission experience, ideally in employment and/or administrative law.
  • A strong track record of providing high-level legal advice in complex public sector or large-scale organisational settings.
  • Strategic judgement, innovative thinking, and the ability to manage emerging legal and policy challenges.
  • Proven leadership in managing people and resources to deliver high-quality outcomes.
  • A Bachelor of Laws and admission (or immediate eligibility for admission) as a legal practitioner of the Supreme Court of Queensland are mandatory.
Benefits

As a member of our team, you will enjoy:

  • A permanent, flexible Queensland public sector role based in Brisbane.
  • A salary package: $166,623 plus leave loading and 12.75% employer superannuation contribution.
  • Flexible working arrangements that support work-life balance.
  • The opportunity to influence outcomes across government while leading a high-performing team.
  • A respectful, inclusive, and supportive workplace culture where your leadership will have real impact.
How to Apply

To apply, please submit your resume (no more than four pages) and a one to two-page cover letter outlining why you would like to join us, what personal qualities you will bring to the role and a summary of your relevant skills and experience.
