Job Overview

We are seeking an experienced Cloud Storage Engineer to lead our technical team in developing and maintaining high-quality search infrastructure. As a Principal Software Engineer at Atlassian, you will contribute to the architectural direction of the Managed Search team, set engineering standards, and provide mentoring to junior team members.

The ideal candidate will have deep knowledge of Elasticsearch/OpenSearch, AWS services, and experience building operationally mature systems with logging, monitoring, SLAs, alerting, and runbooks. They should also possess excellent communication skills for engaging with internal customers, incident management processes, and participating in 24/7 on-call rosters.

Responsibilities
  • Technical Leadership: Contribute to the technical direction of the Managed Search team, drive key decisions, and identify opportunities to improve the platform.
  • Cluster Operations: Design, implement, and operate new and existing Managed Search components, including managing high numbers of clusters for reliability, building tooling and automation, and understanding cluster capacity management.
  • Engagement with Product Teams: Support and guide product teams as they onboard the service to the self-hosted search platform, adapt the platform to cater for their use cases, and contribute to defining appropriate SLAs.
Requirements
  • Deep Elasticsearch/OpenSearch Skills: Operating and tuning large clusters, implementing backup and recovery mechanisms, predicting and preventing cluster issues via monitoring, diagnosing, and fixing unhealthy clusters.
  • AWS Experience: Understanding AWS services, their advantages and limitations, and knowing when to use specific services.
  • Operational Maturity: Building systems with logging, monitoring, SLAs, alerting, and runbooks.
  • Communication Skills: Engaging with internal customers, incident management processes, and participating in 24/7 on-call rosters.
Salary and Benefits
