About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Safety and Governance Lead to join our Liquor State team. As a trusted expert, you will provide safety advice to Liquor State Health & Safety Advisors and the Liquor National business functions to improve capability and confidence in creating a positive safety culture and integrating safety into decision making to deliver improved safety performance and legislative requirements.

Reporting to the Coles Liquor Head of Safety, you will be part of the Group Retail and Manufacturing Safety Team. You will partner with the Liquor team to lead safety projects aimed to deliver performance improvements across the business, support the development and execution of the safety management system and governance frameworks and support the improvement of the safety culture across the business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development and delivery of key Liquor safety projects to drive risk reduction and create a positive safety culture
  • Lead and participate in Liquor internal and external audits in consultation with relevant internal and external stakeholders and support Liquor to complete required activity for the Audit and Risk Committee by providing relevant evidence for audits.
  • Lead and participate in Liquor Self Insurance Licence audits by advising relevant Liquor national stakeholders, state safety and state operations teams how to maintain self-insurance standards.
  • Maintain the Liquor Safety Management System to ensure the System is regularly reviewed and updated to drive safety improvements and a reduction in team and customer injury and illness, including publishing Safety Management System documents to ensure currency of information available to the business
  • Be an expert for Liquor in the Coles Group safety management system to ensure required information is entered in an accurate and timely manner
  • Develop data driven insights to inform risk reduction strategies and Liquor Safety Strategy development
  • Manage the Liquor Hazard Management Risk Assessment Database and work with the safety team to ensure it is operationally aligned and drives risk reduction.
  • Develop safety reports on a regular basis, to meet internal and external business safety reporting requirements, including Board Reports and Safety Management Review
  • Be a trusted expert to the Liquor State Health & Safety Advisors providing support to engage with external WHS regulators and unions

About You and Your Skills


We are looking for a highly skilled and experienced professional with a degree or postgraduate qualification in health and safety or a related discipline and/or at least 3+ years of experience in managing risk and providing practical guidance to businesses on implementation.


Key skills and experience include:

  • Experience in a dynamic, fast paced operational environment, with competing priorities with experience in retailing and/or multi-site preferable
  • Experience in developing effective working relationships and meeting stakeholder requirements through great customer service
  • Experience working with online safety systems to maintain high quality data
  • Proven capability in developing solutions aligned to key business' strategies and objectives, while considering commercially viable and practical solutions.
  • Proven experience in maintaining safety management systems and audit documentation meeting self-insurance or quality management system requirements
  • Proven experience in document design and publishing
  • Strong stakeholder, influencing and customer relationship management skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail and organisational skills to ensure accuracy and consistency of documentation and data
