Crime and Justice Specialist

This is an exciting opportunity to progress your career as a Crime and Justice Specialist in the Specialist Advocacy Unit. Our vision is to be a centre of prosecutorial and legal excellence, with people who are recognised as being fair, just and valued partners in the Victorian justice system.

The Specialist Advocacy Unit is a team of specialist criminal law advocates who represent Victoria Police in state-wide complex and high-profile prosecutions. Senior Advocates within the team appear in complex bail applications and judicial reviews, and provide high level legal advice across a range of complex issues to stakeholders.

If you have exceptional advocacy and written communication skills, and experience conducting matters concerning all manner of summary criminal offences, then this role is for you. You will be required to demonstrate an ability to appear as a court advocate, manage competing priorities effectively, and have a sound understanding of the Victorian criminal justice system.

  • Key Responsibilities:
  • Preparation and appearance work in both the Magistrates' and Children's Court jurisdictions around the state.
  • Appearing in Bail applications in the Magistrates' Court.
  • Provision of legal advice and drafting of court submissions.
  • Supporting Principal and Senior Advocates in the management of complex cases.
  • Preparing legal advice for Victoria Police on complex matters.

Requirements:

  • Admitted to practice as an Australian Lawyer.
  • Unrestricted Australian Practising Certificate or immediately eligible to apply for one.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the law of evidence, bail, sentencing and criminal procedure.
  • Ability to work in a team and developing emerging work environment.
