Care Advocate for Surgical Wards

This position is available in the Critical Care and Surgery Team at Westmead Hospital. As a Social Worker, you will provide high-standard care to patients and families while working in a supportive team environment that values professional, personal, and career development.
About the Role- This is a permanent full-time position classified as a Social Worker Level 1/2.
- You will be responsible for providing clinical coverage to the surgical wards and have opportunities to broaden your skill development through team cover and after-hours crisis on-call work.
The team includes 11 social workers covering various areas such as intensive care, emergency departments, trauma, orthopaedics, general surgery, specialty surgery, Huntington's disease, and renal services.
Requirements- Degree in Social Work with eligibility for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW).
- Demonstrated understanding of psychosocial issues associated with acute and chronic illness.
- Capacity to provide counselling and case management with patients/families with illness adjustment, end-of-life care, and complex discharge issues.
- Clinical experience or understanding of the psychosocial impact of grief, loss, and bereavement.
- Ability to work with culturally and linguistically diverse client groups.
- Well-developed time management skills with excellent written and verbal communication, including report writing skills, and high-level computer literacy.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Ongoing education and development opportunities, including regular clinical supervision, monthly staff development sessions, and external education and training.
- Opportunities to lead and be involved with research, with established partnerships with universities.
- Programs and learning opportunities funded by the employer, including FLASH Allied Health leadership program and Accelerated Implementation Methodology (AIM).
