Legal Research Officer Job Description

The Judicial Commission is seeking a highly skilled legal research officer to join our Research and Sentencing team. We are looking for an experienced candidate with a strong background in criminal law, who can provide expert research and writing services.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Conduct thorough legal research on various topics related to criminal law, sentencing, and evidentiary issues.
  • Prepare high-quality draft material, including articles and reports, for publication by the Commission.
  • Provide guidance and oversight to junior members of the team.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Tertiary qualifications in law, preferably with a minimum of four years' experience in the practice of criminal law.
  • Demonstrated expertise in criminal trial experience and/or conducting criminal law matters.
  • Extensive knowledge of criminal law, including sentencing law, evidence law, and criminal practice and procedure.
  • High-level oral and written communication skills, including the ability to produce legal text suitable for publication.
  • Supervisory experience in a legal office environment.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a small team.
