About the Role

The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Maritime Engineering Manager to join our team. As Assistant Director - Maritime Engineering, you will play a critical role in the management of Australia's new icebreaker, RSV Nuyina.

Key Responsibilities
  • Monitor and review the ship manager's completion of planned and unplanned maintenance activities in accordance with regulatory and original equipment manufacturer requirements.
  • Review and contribute to lifecycle maintenance activities being undertaken by the ship's manager, including major dry-dockings, capital replacement, and obsolescence management.
  • Monitor vessel engineering margins relating to weight, centre of gravity, and electrical growth, and lifecycle monitoring of the platform utilisation, accelerations, and fatigue life based on data from ship systems.
  • Manage and report defects arising during the latent defect periods and through the vessel life, making recommendations for remedying.
  • Monitor the ship manager's configuration management system to ensure that the vessel's engineering configuration is appropriately captured through up-to-date technical documentation.
  • Implement and refine management plans, processes, procedures, and guidelines for the maritime asset management team in line with best commercial maritime industry practice.
Requirements
  • Maritime Engineering: A well-formed knowledge of ship systems and engineering management practices, including an understanding of applicable legislation, regulations, rules, and standards applicable to Regulated Australian Vessels.
  • Configuration Management: Knowledge of contemporary configuration management practices in an engineering context.
  • Project Management: Experience in overseeing complex projects and developing and maintaining technical documentation.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Tertiary qualifications from an Australian university (or an equivalent overseas institution), relevant to the role (e.g. marine engineering, naval architecture, project, program, or major asset management, remote or complex operations management), or equivalent experience.
Eligibility and Other Requirements
  • Citizenship: To be eligible for employment with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, you must be an Australian citizen.
  • Security Clearance: This position requires a Baseline Vetting security clearance. You will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.
  • Pre-employment Check: Your suitability for employment will be assessed through a pre-employment screening process, including a National Police Check, referee checks, character clearance, and where required, a pre-employment medical assessment, specified mandatory qualification(s) validation, and a probation period of 6 months.
