PhD Research Scholarship in Life-Cycle Assessment for Sustainable Products
Job No.: 666800
Location: Clayton campus
Employment Type: Full-time
Duration: 3.5-year fixed-term appointment
Remuneration: $35,013 AUD per annum 2024 full-time rate (tax-free stipend)
The successful candidate will receive a Research Living Allowance, currently valued at $35,013 AUD per annum 2024 full-time rate (tax-free stipend), indexed plus allowances as per RTP stipend scholarship conditions.
Research Opportunity:
Products derived from biogenic carbon, such as carbon dioxide captured from the atmosphere, are becoming leaders in various markets. This is largely due to their potential to serve as direct replacements for fossil fuels without necessitating modifications to engines and industrial processes. However, they are expected to remain more expensive to produce than traditional alternatives for the foreseeable future. In the near term, the economic feasibility of captured carbon products depends on favorable market conditions for lower-carbon alternatives compared to their conventional counterparts.
To certify low carbon intensity products, a thorough cradle-to-grave life cycle analysis is essential. This task is complicated by the nascent stage of many carbon-to-product processes. This PhD research aims to develop and validate robust methodologies to ascertain the carbon intensity of various low carbon products and processes, thereby offering insights and guidelines for the advancement of these technologies.
Desired Candidate Skillset:
Key qualifications for this project include a background in Chemical Engineering and proficiency in modeling chemical systems using MATLAB or a similar programming language. A strong commitment to environmental sustainability and the principles of a circular economy is essential. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively are also required.
Applicants should demonstrate outstanding communication and interpersonal abilities, along with the capacity to conduct self-directed research. The selection committee will prioritize candidates who possess an Australian (or equivalent international) Honours or Master's degree in a relevant field, with a significant research component and first-class honours/H1 awarded.
Candidates currently completing their final year of an Australian Bachelor's Honours degree will be considered for this scholarship, provided the degree is completed by the end of Semester 2, 2024.
Application Process:
Interested candidates should submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) form to Professor Paul Webley. The EOI should include:
- A cover letter outlining the applicant's suitability
- A curriculum vitae, including a list of published works and contact details of two academic referees
- A complete academic record, supported by scanned copies of relevant certified documentation
- Evidence of English-language proficiency (for international applicants only)
- Current residency status
- Shortlisted candidates may be interviewed via Skype if necessary, conducted in English.
Important Note: These documents will be utilized for an initial assessment, and successful candidates will need to re-submit copies of these documents, along with additional required documents, should they advance to a formal application.
If successful with the EOI application, candidates will need to submit a separate Monash University scholarship application in one of the designated rounds.
Applications Close: Applications will close when the role has been filled, no earlier than the specified closing date.
