With the recent acquisition of Syft Analytics, we are accelerating our mission to provide unparalleled insights to our customers. Syft Analytics is a leading global cloud-based reporting, insights, and analytics platform for small businesses, accountants, and bookkeepers.

This role requires regular late hours due to your delivery team being based in South Africa. However, you will have full flexibility on how you structure your day, with required availability for online meetings between 5pm-8pm AEST, Tuesday to Thursday, for the first 12 months.

About the Role
  • You will act as a role model and standard of excellence, supporting a culture of high performance by driving engineering-wide processes and defining quality and best practices.
  • As a strong leader, you will lift team performance through goal clarity, feedback, removing barriers, coaching, and establishing a psychologically safe and inclusive team culture.
  • You will be an expert in your space, staying up-to-date with the latest technologies and devoting time to sharing knowledge widely via talks, blog posts, or written documentation.
  • You will influence the technical strategy of your group, often partnering with senior product and engineering leadership to ensure the health of product development and its overall direction.
  • Day-to-day, you will collaborate with engineers, product managers, designers, and other stakeholders to align technical solutions with business needs.
  • You will share expertise and experience to connect and support the growth of a culture of continuous empathy towards our customers, making architectural decisions, and understanding complex systems to guide teams effectively.
  • You will motivate the growth of talent in the team by identifying skill gaps and ensuring there is a clear strategy to close those gaps.
What You'll Bring
  • Proven experience in a similar software engineering position, focusing on system architecture and design, achieving engineering excellence at scale.
  • Demonstratable knowledge, skills, and expertise leading data platform engineering teams from a technical perspective, including driving project goals, maintaining high standards of quality, and a deep understanding of relevant technologies, tools, and processes.
  • Previous exposure to designing and building modern engineering stacks, with hands-on experience working in AWS and GCP.
  • A focused mindset to champion a culture of experimentation, encouraging the team to test new ideas and technologies through prototypes and proof-of-concept projects.
  • Strong leadership and stakeholder traits, influencing others without authority, and keeping Xero's values at heart.
