About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Instrument Scientist to join our team at the Science and Technology Facilities Council. As an Instrument Scientist, you will play a key role in supporting the science program of the Disordered Materials Group of the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide local expertise to support visiting research teams using our Small Angle Neutron Diffractometer for Amorphous and Liquid Samples (SANDALS)
  • Contribute to an active program of scientific and technological developments
  • Assist in expanding the research program of the Disordered Materials Group
  • Represent the group in scientific fora and actively work to further grow the Disordered Materials community
  • Disseminate research via peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations
  • Conduct local tours for visiting scientists and members of the public
Requirements
  • PhD or equivalent in biology, chemistry, materials science, physics or a related discipline
  • Solid scientific background and clear potential of an independent or collaborative scientific program that would make advantageous use of the instrumentation supported by the ISIS Disordered Materials Group
  • Working experience of at least one large-scale neutron or X-ray facility-based atomic/molecular structural characterization or analysis methodology
  • Evidence of a publication record in relevant science areas: soft/hard condensed matter, etc.
  • Good interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills
  • Ability to interact effectively with staff and ISIS users at all levels
  • Ability to interact effectively and collaboratively with staff and the ISIS user community, at all levels
  • A responsible attitude to personal safety and the safety of others
