Job Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled professional to join our conservation team as a Conservator.

This role involves working with a wide range of object materials and formats in the National Maritime Collection (NMC) to ensure their ongoing preservation in accordance with museum policies, priorities, conservation ethics, and best practice.

The Conservator will undertake routine and complex conservation treatments, documenting each process to maintain accurate records.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct preservation, conservation, and restoration treatments using established and new techniques to meet museum and professional standards.
  • Collaborate with inter-disciplinary teams to contribute conservation expertise to project and program management.
  • Participate in preventive conservation and collection maintenance programs, including environmental monitoring and control, integrated pest management, lighting, pollutant monitoring, and collection safety activities.
  • Conduct collection surveys to assess condition and conservation needs, identify hazards, and develop strategies for mitigation.
  • Assist in risk assessment and management for museum projects and propose treatment options for objects.
  • Support the development and delivery of workshops, public forums, and outreach programs related to conservation.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Recognized tertiary qualifications in materials conservation and a minimum of two years' experience or equivalent combination of education and experience in cultural heritage conservation.
  • Experience from cultural institutions undertaking preventive and remedial conservation of various collection types, with a focus on specialization relevant to the National Maritime Collection.
  • Australian Institute for the Conservation of Cultural Materials (AICCM) Membership.
