About the Role

We are seeking a skilled Media Journalist to join our editorial team in Sydney. As a key member of our newsroom, you will play a vital role in helping us tell the stories that matter most.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to find compelling stories via social media, and produce original reporting that uses cutting-edge verification and open-source intelligence techniques. You will be at home in a fast-paced, video-led, breaking news environment, and able to serve a diverse set of media clients.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Monitor our news feeds for emerging stories and undertake advanced searches using our proprietary tools to discover original, eyewitness content.
  2. Gather and verify user-generated images, posts, videos and other content from the social web.
  3. Write clean, concise and accurate copy for publication on the Storyful Newswire and social platforms.
  4. Contact uploaders and sources involved in stories.
  5. Work closely with newsroom clients and content creators.
  6. Work to deadlines and targets.
  7. Flexibility to work various shifts as needed, including weekends and unsociable hours.
  8. Pitch and develop unique stories that are on brand for Storyful.
  9. Collaborate with colleagues and other teams on stories.
  10. Conduct interviews over the phone.
Requirements
  • Experience in journalism, particularly online or broadcast journalism.
  • A self-starting journalist who is plugged into current events around the world.
  • A fluid, natural communicator who has experience writing and editing copy for publication.
  • Expert understanding of social media platforms.
  • Experience with verification and open-source intelligence (OSINT) techniques and a track record in using them in reporting is an advantage.
  • Ability to source and verify original content from across the social web.
  • Excellent computer skills, including basic knowledge of spreadsheets and publishing within content management systems.
Preferred Skills & Knowledge
  • Foreign-language skills are strongly favored, but not required.
  • Video-editing skills are an advantage, but not mandatory.
