The Role

The Assistant Director of Technical Risk Assessments plays a critical role in the delivery of Defence ICT Systems, ensuring that adequate security controls are implemented to defend against an evolving threat landscape.

As a key member of the Defence Cyber and Information Assurance Branch, you will provide direction to Defence ICT system owners, ICT projects, cyber security stakeholders, and Defence vendors.

  • Manage the ongoing implementation of improved assessment processes to ensure Defence maintains a capability that effectively assesses the cyber security posture of Defence ICT and quantifies cyber risk against current threats and technology trends.
  • Engage with government organisations and industry partners to build relationships and drive collaboration.
  • Develop and lead a high-performing team, providing coaching, feedback, and mentoring to build technical competency and resiliency.
  • Assess technical design documentation and identify cyber risks, recommending effective controls to mitigate threats.

Occasional travel to Canberra may be required. The successful applicant will be located near a Defence base to access the Secret network when needed.

About Our Team

Defence Cyber and Information Assurance Branch is a leading organisation in securing, assuring, and defending Defence's systems to support Defence's mission.

We are a multi-disciplined team consisting of APS, ADF, and contractors working with all Groups and Services to protect Defence information system capabilities.

The Directorate of Cyber Security Assessments and Authorisation (DCSAA) is responsible for cyber risk assessment and the conduct of assessment and authorisation of Defence ICT Systems.

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Cyber Security Risk and Compliance practitioner with a strong technical background and leadership abilities.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Proficiency in providing cyber risk assessment services and enabling effective cyber risk management.
  • Strong technical skills and confidence in reading system architecture diagrams and communicating complex ICT structures to stakeholders.
  • Proven leadership experience of multi-disciplinary teams and a strong ability to drive collaboration.
  • Pragmatic self-starter with a proven ability to manage competing priorities and solve complex problems.
  • Well-developed organisational skills, data management best practice, and comprehensive analytical skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills to break down technically complex language and communicate effectively with users, managers, and executive board members.
