About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Buyer to join our General Merchandise team. As a key member of the team, you will be responsible for sourcing and developing supplier relationships to maximize WHSmith's opportunities to buy the right products at the right price at the right time.

Your primary objective will be to range, buy, and manage product categories within the General Merchandise Buying team, ensuring our offering is innovative, customer-led, and commercially successful.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who thrives in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, with a strong analytical mindset and excellent interpersonal skills. You will have the autonomy to come up with and implement category strategies, driving growth and development in new areas of business identified as strategic growth opportunities.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Sourcing and developing supplier relationships to ensure WHSmith has access to the best products at competitive prices.
  • Growing and developing new areas of business, identified as strategic growth opportunities.
  • Identifying market trends by researching product history, supplier information, current trends, and competitor activity.
  • Analysing historical statistical data, reviewing sales, profit, stock-turn, markdowns, by colour, subclass, and supplier performance.
  • Conducting regular financial analysis of sales, margins, stock levels, and markdowns, re-evaluating merchandise plans accordingly.
  • Identifying opportunities to grow rebates across the category.
  • Maintaining collaborative relationships with stores through regular visits.
Requirements

To succeed in this role, you will need to have:

  • Proven experience as a Buyer or Category Manager, preferably with experience across general merchandise.
  • Exceptional negotiation skills.
  • An analytical mindset with the ability to interpret data and market information.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain supplier relationships.
  • A results-driven mindset with a focus on meeting targets.
  • The ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Strong customer focus.
