The Prison Disability Support Initiative is a rehabilitation service that assists people in custody with cognitive impairments and complex disability needs.

We are seeking a dedicated individual to play a key role in helping people understand their disability and manage their behaviours.

This role involves engaging directly with people in custody, identifying prisoners with neurological and physical impairments, assessing disability needs and providing supportive services.

As a Disability Support Officer, you will work closely with corrections staff to educate them on how to better understand and support people in their care.

You will also be responsible for training corrections staff to respond effectively to cognitive impairment and challenging behaviours.

The initiative aims to identify prisoners with neurological and physical impairments, assess disability needs and inform decisions on placement, case management and rehabilitation.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Engaging directly with people in custody to understand their needs
  • Keeping accurate clinical records and ensuring all work follows professional and legal guidelines
  • Advising staff and external agencies on the best ways to support people with disability and complex needs
  • Training corrections staff to better understand and respond to cognitive impairment and challenging behaviours

Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experience working with people who demonstrate cognitive impairments
  • Demonstrated experience in leading case coordination, support pathway planning, advocacy and providing supportive services to people who demonstrate cognitive impairments
  • An understanding of the challenges involved in working within a forensic environment
  • Demonstrated experience working within the field of disability and/or the criminal justice system
