Program Overview:

We have an exciting opportunity for a Parent Mentor to join our Starting Out Program.

The program supports young people under 25 years who are pregnant or parenting, and experiencing complex issues that impact on parenting, family life and children's wellbeing.

Starting Out aims to enhance the parenting capacity of participants through assertive outreach and group work.

As a Parent Mentor you will:

  • Support a team of specialist social workers in their work with young families
  • Participate in group work and provide general support to young parents and their children
  • Role-model and mentor positive parenting and play with young parents, fostering healthy relationships and promoting the well-being of children and their families
  • Bring your personal experiences of young parenting - from lived experience and/or relevant studies

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary team to provide comprehensive support services to young parents and their children
  • Engage in regular communication with young parents to understand their needs and develop effective support plans
  • Develop and deliver educational programs and workshops to promote positive parenting practices and improve child development outcomes

Requirements:

You will meet the person specification in the position description. In particular, you will have:

  • A genuine interest in and commitment to supporting children, young people and families in need
  • An understanding of issues faced by young pregnant women and young parents, including the challenges they face and the importance of early intervention
  • Knowledge of ages, stages and development of infants and young children, including the importance of early childhood education and care
  • Strong team work and communication skills, including the ability to work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary team
