Pregnancy Care Specialist

About the Job

Birthing services in the Northern Territory are provided across four geographical locations: Darwin, Alice Springs, Katherine, and Nhulunbuy. The region offers diverse settings for antenatal, postnatal, and intrapartum care.

The Northern Territory Health Department provides various models of care, including:

  • Midwifery Group Practice (caseload/continuity of carer)
  • Team midwifery
  • Remote Area Maternity care
  • General Practitioner Obstetrician care
  • Shared care
  • Public hospital maternity care
  • Public hospital high risk maternity care

Candidates must have a minimum of 12 months experience in a relevant clinical area to be considered for this role.

Main Responsibilities
  1. Provide expert pregnancy care to an allocated group of clients, assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating their needs.
  2. Work within the registered nurse/midwife scope of practice and adhere to relevant legislation, procedures, guidelines, and standards.
  3. Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team and contribute to a safe work environment for consumers and staff.
  4. Demonstrate NTH values: safe; responsive; kind – in all interactions with consumers and colleagues.
  5. Foster a positive workplace culture through role modelling appropriate behaviour.
  6. Maintain defined service quality standards, Workplace Health and Safety policies, and procedures.
  7. Capacity to work shift work and be redeployed to other clinical areas as needed.
Selection Criteria
  • Current registration as a Registered Nurse or Registered Midwife with the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Australia.
  • Demonstrated understanding of client care coordination and ability to achieve positive clinical outcomes.
  • Effective written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills to contribute to the multidisciplinary team.
  • Understanding of social and cultural issues influencing healthcare provision.
  • Knowledge of Continuous Quality Improvement principles in a healthcare setting.
