About the Organization
The Central Australian Women's Legal Service (CAWLS) is a proactive Community Legal Centre focused on supporting women in Central Australia and the Barkly Region. With offices dedicated to providing essential legal services, CAWLS specializes in assisting women impacted by Domestic and Family Violence, ensuring a culturally safe and holistic approach.
Role Overview
CAWLS is seeking a Full-Time Civil Lawyer based in Tennant Creek, NT. This position involves reporting to the Senior Management Team and is primarily responsible for delivering legal advice, representation, and referrals in critical areas such as family law, domestic violence, and child protection.
Key Responsibilities
- Delivering high-quality legal counsel and representation within CAWLS's areas of expertise.
- Contributing to the development and enhancement of legal practice and operational systems.
- Providing comprehensive and integrated services for clients.
- Representing clients in court and offering duty lawyer services.
- Conducting outreach initiatives to deliver legal advice and representation.
- Planning, executing, and assessing community legal education resources and presentations.
Why Gender-Specific Focus?
This role is essential in addressing issues that specifically affect women, directly contributing to the empowerment of women and girls in legal contexts. This aligns with the exemptions under the Australian Sex Discrimination Act, recognizing gender as a genuine occupational qualification for roles aimed at supporting a specific gender.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will hold a Practising Certificate in the Northern Territory and demonstrate a proven ability to provide high-quality legal advice and casework. A minimum of two years' experience in an Australian legal practice is required. Additionally, the following qualifications will be advantageous:
- Experience working with individuals from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) or First Nations backgrounds.
- Expertise in general civil law matters, particularly those related to domestic and family violence.
- Prior experience in a Community Legal Centre.
- Familiarity with CLASS (database).
Skills and Attributes
The successful candidate will exhibit strong teamwork and independent working abilities, excellent time management skills, and a commitment to social justice and equality. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills are essential, including the capacity to simplify complex legal concepts. A personal commitment to self-reflection and resilience is also crucial for managing the impacts of vicarious trauma.
Compensation and Benefits
The position offers a competitive salary ranging from $76,000 to $88,000 plus superannuation, commensurate with experience. Additional benefits include:
- Rent Subsidy and Relocation assistance.
- Remote Allowances.
- Six weeks of annual leave plus an additional 12 days of personal leave.
- Salary Sacrificing options.
- A supportive work environment with ample on-the-job training.
- Paid professional development opportunities.
This role presents a unique opportunity to leverage your legal expertise to support women in Central Australia, making a tangible difference in their lives and the communities served by CAWLS.
