Research Scientist Opportunity at Garvan Institute of Medical Research

Seeking a highly motivated and experienced Research Assistant or Research Officer to join our team at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research in Sydney, Australia. As a research professional, you will be part of a dynamic and collaborative environment focused on understanding the molecular and cellular requirements for successful immune responses.
The Immunology & Immunodeficiency Lab is led by Prof Stuart Tangye and aims to identify the genetic causes of immune diseases such as early-onset and recurrent infections, autoimmunity, or allergy. Our goal is to determine molecular, biochemical, and cellular mechanisms responsible for these conditions and use this information to diagnose affected individuals, guide treatments, and predict disease outcomes.
About the RoleWe are looking for an experienced researcher to conduct independent experiments within their Research Platform. Key responsibilities include:
- Design and manage own experiments and report findings back to supervisor
- Regularly attend seminars and conferences
- Contribute towards research projects through joint authorship of abstracts and publications in relevant journals
- Develop research-related material with guidance from senior staff and assist in the design and operation of laboratory equipment
- Proactively manage lab management functions and resource issues
The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to continuous delivery of high-quality work, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with researchers across laboratories.
RequirementsTo be considered for this role, you will require:
- A Bachelor's Degree in Science or Medicine (with Honours) or a PhD/Medicine in a relevant area (immunology, biochemistry, molecular biology)
- Competent computer skills and high level of accuracy and attention to detail
- Specific technical expertise relating to position or field of study
- Appointment at this level would normally require at least 4 years' experience within a lab, however this alone is not sufficient
