Job Overview

The Senior Engineering Manager is responsible for leading a team of engineers that delivers critical components of Ubuntu, including system startup, compilers, language runtimes, and toolchains.

This role involves working from home with regular in-person team sprints, typically twice a year for 1-2 weeks.

The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of Linux and Ubuntu, exceptional leadership skills, and experience managing or leading a team of software engineers.

  • Lead and grow a distributed team of engineers
  • Demonstrate sound engineering principles through active and hands-on leadership
  • Be responsible for planning, estimation, and execution
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive the advancement and adoption of the latest software development practices
  • Engage with other teams to ensure alignment on product architecture and roadmaps

The successful candidate will have worked extensively with Linux distributions, packaging technologies (e.g., deb, rpm), and have high-quality software engineering knowledge in one or more areas: Linux system architecture, boot process, Java/GCC/Python/Rust/Go toolchains, ARM, and/or RISC-V.

As a Senior Engineering Manager, you will be expected to positively influence the culture, facilitate technical delivery, and drive your team on strategy and execution.
