About the Role

The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) is seeking a highly skilled Duty Solicitor to join our team in Canberra, ACT. As a Duty Solicitor, you will play a critical role in providing high-quality legal advice and representation to Aboriginal clients in the ACT Magistrates Court and Children’s Court.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Providing culturally appropriate legal advice and representation to Aboriginal clients
  • Assisting clients in resolving their legal problems
  • Researching, preparing, and providing representation for Aboriginal clients in criminal law matters
  • Performing criminal law appearance work as directed
  • Assisting with the development of submissions on law reform and representing the ALS at meetings and conferences

Requirements:

  • Legal qualifications and a current ACT Practising Certificate
  • Up-to-date knowledge of the criminal law, including practice and procedure
  • Proven capacity to identify and understand legal issues facing socially and economically disadvantaged Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work autonomously
