Job Description

The role of Specialist Physiotherapist is a critical one, requiring the individual to possess exceptional clinical skills and leadership abilities. This position involves overseeing specialist clinical practice, leading clinical practice, managing resources, and engaging in professional development.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Maintain expert clinical skills and provide advice on specialist areas.
  • Organize and prioritize workload, monitoring supervised staff within defined areas.
  • Independently screen, prioritize, and plan interventions for routine and urgent referrals within the specialist area.
  • Utilize sound clinical judgments to prioritize patients effectively, ensuring efficient resource allocation.
  • Assist supervised staff in prioritizing their caseloads and advise them on appropriate interventions for urgent and complex cases.
  • Conduct holistic assessments of patients with diverse or complex presentations, utilizing analytical and clinical reasoning skills to provide accurate diagnoses and implement rehabilitation programs.
  • Work with patients lacking capacity to consent to treatment, gaining valid informed consent and adhering to legal frameworks.
  • Maintain timely documentation of clinical records, auditing supervisee documentation to ensure compliance with trust standards.
  • Establish empathetic relationships with patients and carers, reassuring, supporting, and engaging their involvement in rehabilitation processes.
  • Communicate complex information regarding diagnosis, rehabilitation aims, and expected outcomes to patients and carers in a clear, sensitive manner.
Leader of Clinical Practice
  • Communicate effectively with patients and carers to maximize rehabilitation potential.
  • Liaise with multidisciplinary teams and professionals regarding patient management and discharge.
  • Take delegated responsibility from senior therapists in managing patients with particular conditions.
  • Be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of work, including patient management.
  • Communicate effectively and collaborate with medical, nursing, and therapy colleagues to deliver coordinated services.
  • Participate in clinical governance procedures, recording and reporting incidents, and managing informal complaints.
Manager of Resources
  • Plan and implement team profiles, recruiting, selecting, and retaining staff to maintain an appropriate skill mix.
  • Appraise and develop clinical activities, monitoring individual and team performance, addressing capability issues as needed.
  • Contribute to providing flexible and timely services.
  • Formally supervise less experienced staff, allocating tasks within their roles and competencies.
  • Actively participate in data collection and statistics for department use.
Professional Development
  • Be responsible for continuous professional development, evidenced by attendance at relevant courses, achieving appraisal objectives, and maintaining a professional portfolio.
  • Participate in in-service training programs, attending training sessions, and practicing reflective practice.
  • Undertake measurement and evaluation of work through evidence-based practice projects, audit, research, and outcome measures.
